Nutrition / Dietitian Services
Most people would rather spend their money going out to dinner than going to see a dietitian to learn about healthy eating. Most people believe they know what to eat, how much to eat, and how often to eat. If this were true we would not had many people with eating disorders, poor eating habits, and obesity. Consider these statistics:
The Alliance for Eating Disorders ( www.eatingdisorderinfo.org) reports these statistics:
- Over one-half of teenage girls and nearly one-third of teenage boys use unhealthy weight control behaviors such as skipping meals, fasting, smoking cigarettes, vomiting, and taking laxatives (Neumark-Sztainer, 2005).
- Eighty-one percent of 10 year olds are afraid of being fat (Mellin et al., 1991).
- The average American woman is 5’4” tall and weighs 140 pounds. The average American model is 5’11” tall and weighs 117 pounds.
- Most fashion models are thinner than 98% of American women (Smolak, 1996).
- Ninety-one percent of women recently surveyed on a college campus had attempted to control their weight through dieting, 22% dieted “often” or “always” (Kurth et al., 1995).
- 95% of all dieters will regain their lost weight in 1-5 years (Grodstein, et al., 1996).
- Americans spend over $40 billion on dieting and diet-related products each year (Smolak, 1996).
The National Eating Disorders Association (www.nationaleatingdisorders.org) reports that, in the U.S.:
- In the U.S., 0.9% of people have anorexia
- In the U.S., 1.5% of people have bulimia
- In the U.S., 3.5% of people have binge eating disorder
Clearly, this is no small problem. And most people would benefit from counseling and programs to help them. Sadly, many will never have the opportunity or courage to get that help. Our hope at The Hull Institute is that you and your loved one will reach out for help.
